The foundation of Hungerford preeminence in England rested squarely on the acquisitions, connections and dynastic planning of Sir Thomas Hungerford. Sir Thomas (died 3 December 1398) was the first person to be recorded in the rolls of the Parliament of England as holding the (pre-existing) office of Speaker of the House of Commons of England but he is perhaps best known as the Speaker of the Bad Parliament of 1377. He was one of the most important figures to sit during that period.
