John Hungerford Arkwright wrote to his father John Arkwright the following:

Oct 1846

My dear Papa,

I received the money quite safe and thank you for it.  You mistook the price of the tackle, for instead of 8 pounds as you thought it was 3 pounds “ 10/, so as I have the money, I think it will not be worth sending it back so have you any objection to my giving 1 pound to the church and keeping the rest to pay for part of the expenses of coming home.  We enjoyed our trip to Portland very much, and recognised a great many things there.  We went in our accustomed old coach, which almost seemed delighted to have some work.  We passed through Wyke coming home and I saw Mr. Menzie’s house, whose owner I believe is now in it.  Should you like a few verses of my composition, if so and you give me a subject, I will try to scrape time to do them.  It was Mr. Leakey’s birthday on Friday and he became 24 on that memorable day.  I am glad that my pony is in good condition, I hope it will continue so.  I have no more to say.  With best love I remain your affecionate dutiful son.

John H. Arkwright
